Health Care Reform

I would like to offer a little advice to our new president in an area he has made a priority for his first term, Health Care Reform. First of all, what is being proposed is not health care reform at all. It is just the usual reshuffling of who gets the biggest slice from the national spending pie.
Health care in this country and many others is based on treating the sick after the fact and ignoring the causes. The main reason for this is that it is easier to sell a cure than it is prevention, any snake oil salesman knows that. People would rather pop a pill for indigestion than stop eating pepperoni pizza, or have their stomachs stapled instead of laying off the fast food fries.
The drug companies are really not interested in curing anything despite their altruistic claims of spending millions on research and development. They spend far more on advertising on TV and in magazines than they do on research with the goal of getting more people paying high prices for drugs that they have a patent on. When did you last see an ad for penicillin or prednisone? You won't, because although these drugs are still used effectively and are being manufactured generically, the profit margin is much much less than the "newest latest" concoction.
Yet the companies that make them are making a profit or they wouldn't be doing it. So how much is enough profit? Well enough profit should be enough to keep a company afloat, pay salaries, pay investors a fair return and oh yes, pay everyone's health care costs!
Mr. Obama, it will not be enough to redistribute the wealth without re-educating our people on how to stay healthy in the first place or at least have an alternative to the AMA and FDA sanctioned education being the only game in town.
You want to know why our healthcare costs are crippling the economy and forcing manufacturers to outsource to Asia?

Follow the money!
